Spartan Women's Tennis Defeated By Indiana, 5-2

EAST LANSING, Mich. - The Michigan State women's tennis team fell to 8-10 on the season and 0-6 in the Big Ten as it was defeated by Indiana, 5-2 on Saturday (April 5) in Bloomington. The Hoosiers improved to 9-10 overall and 1-4 in the conference.
Spartan freshman Marta Walasek (Ann Arbor) recorded her first victory as a Spartan on Saturday. Walasek paired up with junior Josie Schmude (Traverse City) at the No. 3 doubles position, topping IU's Dominika Walterova and Sophie Rychlik, 8-6. Schmude is now one win shy of her 10th win on the season overall.
Michigan State sophomore Keri Thompson (Clark Lake) picked up her 28th win of the season and first at the No. 2 singles spot as she downed Indiana's Sarah Batty, 7-5, 1-6, 6-4. Thompson's 28 wins put her in a tie for overall team victories on the season with junior Caroline Lay (Brisbane, Australia). Thompson also leads the team in overall singles wins with 17 and overall Big Ten wins with seven. Saturday's win was Thompson's 10th singles win of spring dual competition making her the third Spartan to reach that mark (Caroline Lay-10, Kate Thomas-11).
MSU Sophomore Kate Thomas (Long Beach, Calif.) defeated Dominika Walterova, 3-6, 6-2, 7-6 at the No. 4 singles position on Saturday. Thomas now has 22 wins overall, which is the third best on the team behind Thompson and Lay. Thomas and Thompson now lead the team in Big Ten singles victories with three.
Next week, the Spartans return to East Lansing to take on Purdue (April 12) and No. 24 Illinois (April 13).
