EAST LANSING, Mich. - The Michigan State women's tennis team was defeated by No. 56 Purdue, 6-1 on Saturday (April 12) at the MSU Indoor Tennis Facility in East Lansing. The Spartans fall to 8-11 overall and 0-7 in the Big Ten, while Purdue improves to 10-9 overall and 3-4 in the conference. Michigan State will face No. 22 Illinois at 10 a.m. in East Lansing on Sunday (April 13). The Boilermakers head to Ann Arbor to face No. 48 Michigan on Sunday.
MSU junior Caroline Lay (Brisbane, Australia) picked up her 29th and 30th victories of the season on Saturday. Lay paired up with sophomore Keri Thompson (Clark Lake) at the No. 1 doubles spot defeating Missy Wright and Lara Burgarello, 8-6. They are now 9-5 as doubles partners and 4-2 in Big Ten play.
Lay went on to defeat nationally-ranked Amy Walgenbach (114th) in a three-set battle (3-6, 6-3, 10-7) at the No. 2 singles position to earn her team-leading 30th win of the season. Thompson played her first career match at the No. 1 singles position as a Spartan on Saturday, swapping spots with Lay. Thompson now has 29 wins on the season.
"The team showed a lot of mental discipline today," said head coach Tim Bauer. "We are in a position were we are missing a lot of players due to injury, but we know we are improving and that's the key. We pay attention to improvement and take pride in it. When we have more success in the future, we can look back and know that it all starts in challenging times like these."
