EAST LANSING, Mich. - The Michigan State men's golf team is in first place after day one of the 36th annual Bruce Fossum/TaylorMade Invitational Saturday (April 26) at Forest Akers West Golf Course, located on the campus of Michigan State University. The Spartans carded a two-round team score of 575 (289-286) and hold a one-stroke lead over defending NCAA Champion Minnesota. Blue skies and temperatures and in the mid-60s made for optimum scoring conditions.
Sophomore Andrew Ruthkoski (Muskegon, Mich.) paced Michigan State, firing a two-round score of 141. Ruthkoski began the day by shooting a 1-under score 71 in the first round. He shot a 2-under score of 70 for the second round. Ruthkoski enters Sunday's final round three strokes under par, tied for fourth place.
Junior Casey Lubahn (Sand Lake, Mich.) also turned in a fantastic effort for the Spartans. Lubahn shot a 2-under first-round score of 70 and followed that up with an even third-round score of 72. Lubahn is two strokes under par with a two-round score 142, good for a share of sixth place.
Senior All-American Eric Jorgensen (Big Rapids, Mich.) carded a two-round score of 147 and is tied for 20th. Jorgensen's steady effort included a first-round score of 74 followed by second-round score of 73. Junior Ben Fox (Fort Wayne, Ind.) rebounded from a first-round score of 82 to fire a 1-under 71 for the second round. Senior co-captain John Koskinen (Baraga, Mich.) recorded a first-round score of 74 followed by a second-round score of 82, good for a two-round score of 156.
Senior Lorne Don (Toronto, Ont.), junior J.J. Beckstrom (North Muskegon, Mich.) and sophomore James Chestnut (Grand Blanc, Mich.) competed unattached as individuals. Beckstrom's two-round score of 151 was highlighted by his 1-under 71 in the second round. Don carded a two-round score of 157 (79-78) while Chestnut shot a two-round score of 159 (79-80).
James Lepp of Illinois tops the individual leaderboard as he fired rounds of 69 and 67, giving him a two-round score of 136.
The final round of 18 holes is slated for 9:00 a.m. Sunday at Forest Akers West Golf Course.
