EAST LANSING, Mich. - The 65th-ranked Michigan State men's tennis team remained undefeated with two more wins Saturday (Feb. 8) at the MSU Indoor Tennis Center. MSU shut out both opponents 7-0, defeating DePaul in the morning and Xavier in the nightcap. The Spartans improve to 8-0 for the season, which is the best start for the program in 36 years.
"Our guys are continuing to play well, and they did what they had to do today," said MSU head coach Gene Orlando. "They took charge in the first match. It was a little tougher in the second match with the different lineup, but they came through. It's nice to pick up a couple of wins, but we have a big weekend ahead at Ball State."
MSU began the day by claiming every set in dominating DePaul, 7-0. The combo of Cameron Marshall (So., Louisville, Ky.) and Eric Simonton (Jr., Annandale, N.J.) stayed undefeated in dual action in their 8-1 win at No. 1 doubles. The doubles' teams of Jimmy McGuire (Sr., Columbus, Ohio) and Adam Hourani (Sr., Lansing) along with Chris Mitchell (Jr., Ann Arbor) and Andy Formanczyk (So., Rochester Hills) completed the doubles sweep with 8-4 wins at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles, respectively.
In singles action, Formanczyk won his first match of the season in the No. 1 slot with a 6-4, 6-4 victory over Andy Michael. Chris Mitchell remained perfect in dual action with a 6-4, 6-4 win at No. 2 singles and Cameron Marshall upped his mark to 6-1 in dual meets with a 6-2, 6-1 victory over Sam Davidson.
Simonton and Goran Topalo (Sr., Prague, Czech Repulic) easily defeated their opponents at No. 4 and No. 5 singles, respectively, while Jimmy McGuire claimed victory at No. 6 singles due to a default. Simonton extended his career-high winning streak to seven matches with the win.
Coach Orlando featured a different lineup against the Muskateers, but ended up with the same results as MSU did not lose a set in the singles competition for the second-straight match. Topalo took advantage of playing in the No. 1 singles position for the first time this season, winning 6-1, 6-2 over Matt Thinnes. Formanczyk, McGuire, Hourani, Josh Efros (So., West Bloomfield) and Mike Jonckheere (Jr., London, Ontario) claimed the rest of the singles victories for the Spartans.
At doubles against Xavier, Efros and Topalo teamed up for an 8-6 win at No. 1 while Simonton and Jonckheere won 8-2 at No. 3 to earn the point for Michigan State.
The Spartans return to action to face Ball State in Muncie, Ind., on Saturday, Feb. 15.
