The Michigan State men's swimming and diving team are in tenth-place following the second day of competition at the 2003 Big Ten Men's Championships in Ann Arbor, Mich. Another school record fell, as the 200-medley relay team of Karl Sunryd (Molndal, Sweden), Ian Clutten (Capetown, South Africa), Joel Hageman (Fort Wayne, Ind.) and Nick DeFauw (West Bloomfield, Mich.) finished seventh in the event finals, with an NCAA consideration time of 1:29.38. The time bested the previous standard set last season.
Clutten was the top Spartan finisher of the day, claiming a fourth-place finish in the 200-breaststroke. His NCAA consideration time of 54.43 was just 0.13 off of the NCAA automatic qualifying time.
Sunryd finished second in the consolation heat of the 100-backstroke (10th overall) with a 50.04, while Joe Brennan (Poway, Calif.) finished 15th in the conference in the 200-freestyle in a time of 1:39.33. Michigan State also received points from diver Justin Laskowski (Bay City, Mich.), who finished 16th in the conference on the three-meter board. The 800-freestyle relay team of Brennan, Matt Wisniewski (Plymouth, Mich.), David Habel (Cincinnati, Ohio) and Rudolf Wagenaar (Capetown, South Africa) finished ninth, with a time of 6:44.89.
Habel was the first alternate to the 400-individual medley finals, while Lucas Lehner (Battle Creek, Mich.) was the first alternate in the 100-backstroke.
The 2003 Big Ten Championships conclude tomorrow (March 1). Preliminary heats for the 200-backstroke, 100-freestyle, 200-breaststroke and 200-butterfly, as well as the first round of platform diving will begin at noon. The finals for those events, along with the 1,650-freestyle and 400-freestyle medley relays will be contested at 7 p.m., at Canham Natatorium on the campus of the University of Michigan.
