Women's Swimming and Diving Completes Successful Weekend

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The Michigan State women's swimming and diving team concluded the 2003 Big Ten Women's Championships in West Lafayette, Ind., on Saturday, Feb. 22. The Spartans finished in 11th-place, but posted 10 NCAA consideration times and set eight new school records. Also, over half of the team set new personal best times in their respective events over the four-day competition.
Sophomore Tammy Jones (Conyers, Ga.), who has made her mark on the MSU record book over the past four days, continued on Saturday, broke the school mark with Rachael Hagerman (Goodland, Kan.), in the morning preliminary time trials for the 100-freestyle. Jones and Hagerman both touched the wall in 50.77, besting the previous record of 50.94, which was set in 1986. In the event finals, Jones finished 12th, while Hagerman placed 16th.
The 400-freestyle relay team also added its name to the Spartan annals. Katrina Kniff (Grand Rapids, Mich.), Alicia Copestick (East Liverpool, Ohio), Jones and Hagerman teamed up to finish the race in 3:24.87 - breaking the previous best of 3:25.80, a standard that had stood for 17 years. The quartet finished ninth in the finals.
Senior Kate Duncombe (Erie, Pa.) finished fourth in the consolation heat of the 200-backstroke, touching the wall at 2:02.82.
