CLEVELAND, Ohio - The No. 70 Michigan State men's tennis team improved its record to 9-2 after a 7-0 victory over Cleveland State Sunday (Feb. 23) in a match-up pitting head coach Gene Orlando against former MSU assistant coach Brian Etzkin. It is the sixth time this season the Spartans have shutout an opponent.
The Spartans jumped out to an early lead by sweeping the doubles matches. Junior Eric Simonton (Annandale, N.J.) and sophomore Cameron Marshall (Louisville, Ky.) have won six of their last seven matches with an 8-3 win at No. 1. Seniors Adam Hourani (Lansing, Mich.) and Jimmy McGuire (Columbus, Ohio) increased their winning streak to four with an 8-5 win at No. 2, while sophomores Josh Efros (West Bloomfield, Mich.) and Anthony Stefani (Grosse Pointe Shores, Mich.) teamed up for the first time in their careers for an 8-1 win at No. 3.
The shutout would be complete as the Green and White won every set in all six singles matches. Sophomore Andrew Formanczyk (Rochester Hills, Mich.) picked up a 6-2, 6-2 win at No. 1 and Mitchell posted a 7-6(5), 6-2 victory at No. 2. He is now 3-1 in tiebreakers this year. Marshall, meanwhile, grabbed a 6-1, 6-2 win at No. 3 and is now 17-8 for the season while achieving a 9-1 record in his last ten matches.
Simonton stayed a perfect 4-0 at No. 4 singles with a 6-2, 6-1 triumph and is now 15-9 overall. McGuire set a personal mark at No. 5 with his first career 6-0, 6-0 win and Hourani grabbed a 6-1, 6-3 victory at No. 6. He is now 13-7 for the season and 6-1 in dual match play.
Michigan State was supposed to travel to Columbus, Ohio, to face No. 14 Virginia Commonwealth Sunday afternoon, but the match had been cancelled due to numerous injuries in the Rams' lineup.
The Spartans' next match will be during their spring break trip beginning March 4 when they travel to Arkansas, who is currently ranked No. 28. MSU will also visit No. 54 Tulsa and Oklahoma March 6 and 8, respectively.
"We are looking forward to a challenging spring break," said Orlando. "Playing two ranked teams on their courts will be a great opportunity for us as a team."
