MSU Swimming Wraps Up Competition At Auburn Invitational

AUBURN, Ala. - The Michigan State swimming and diving team concluded competition at the Auburn Invitational Saturday, paced by sophomores Ian Clutten (Capetown, South Africa/Westerford) and Courtney Ellabarger (Carmel, Ind./Carmel) in the 200 breaststroke. Clutten finished third in th event with a time of 2:01.98 while Ellabarger was fourth with a time of 2:20.68.
In the 200 back, Rudolf Wagenaar (Capetown, South Africa/Grey College) finished third with a time of 1:51.43. Teammate Jason Vadney (Taylor Mill, Ky./Scott) rounded out finishers in the 100 free 'A' final with his time of 46.24, good for eighth place. Nick Harley (Rockford, Mich./Rockford) placed 23rd in the event with a time of 50.67.
In the women's 100 free, Tammy Jones (Conyers, Ga./Salem) finished fifth with a time of 50.64, good for an NCAA provisional qualifying standard. Teammate Katrina Kniff (Grand Rapids, Mich./East Grand Rapids) swam a provisional time in the event as well with her mark of 51.21.
In the 400 free relay, Jones, Kniff, Eve Brusie (Grand Haven, Mich./Grand Haven) and Ellabarger placed fifth with a time of 3:44.42 while the men's team placed fourth in the event. Harley, Clutten, Vadney and Wagenaar teamed up for a time of 3:05.86.
MSU heads to Ft. Lauderdale December 29-January 9 for its annual winter training trip. The Spartans will face Rutgers and Miami January 2, 2004, before returning to East Lansing.
