John L. Smith's passionate approach to life blossomed while growing up with three brothers and a sister on a 40-acre farm in southeast Idaho.

On his parents' spread, and in the foothills of his grandfather's property nearby, the future Michigan State football coach and his siblings rode horses, caught lizards and constructed makeshift bows and arrows to target animals and snakes. More from the San Antonio Express-News
