Swimming & Diving Continues Strong Performance at Indiana Invite

Bloomington, Ind. - Michigan State swimming and diving continued competition at the Indiana Invite in Bloomington, Ind., with strong performances in day two of the three-day competition.
The men sit in fourth place with 379 points, behind Pittsburgh, Indiana and Missouri. The women fell to sixth place Saturday with 293 team points. Indiana leads the women's invitational with 582 points.
The women were paced by junior Tammy Jones' runner-up finish in the 100-meter fly and Courtney Ellabarger's third-place finish in the 100-meter breaststroke while the men were led by freshman Jason Vadney's third-place finish in the 200-meter freestyle and sophomore Ian Clutten's third-place finish in the 100-meter breaststroke.
The 100 fly saw Jones take runner-up honors in the championship finals, scoring 17 points with her time of 1:02.31. In short-course yards, Jones' time of 55.83 is a team-best in the event this season. Freshman Megan Reponen finished 13th in the consolation finals with a time of 1:05.31, contributing points in the team effort.
In the 100-meter breaststroke, Ellabarger finished third with a time of 1:11.43, good for 16 points in team scoring. Senior Lindsay Fetters contributed points with her 14th-place finish (1:14.30).
In the 200-meter medley relay, sophomore Rachael Hagerman, Ellabarger, Jones and freshman Eve Brusie combined to finish fourth, scoring 30 team points with a time of 1:57.01. In the same event, freshmen Carly Zenk and Megan Reponen joined senior Lindsay Fetters and junior Alicia Copestick to finish ninth (1:59.65).
In the 800-meter free relay, Jones, Lindsay Rodin, Crissy Spaulding and Tesla Hughes combined for an eighth-place finish with a time of 8:36.53 and 24 team points.
In the 400-meter IM, junior Andrea Yocum finished 15th in the consolation finals with a time of 5:11.82. In the 100-meter backstroke, Hagerman (1:07.59), Kira Gallagher (1:07.66) and Zenk (1:07.79) took 14th, 15th and 16th places, respectively.
In women's diving action, freshman Katie Edwards finished strong on the three-meter board with a score of 371.00 to finish seventh. Amy Schmidt (342.20), Dianna Anderson (306.95) and Allison Sayers (281.90) rounded out scoring in the diving events.
For the men, the 200-meter freestyle saw Vadney claim third place with a time of 1:53.68 in the championship finals, to add 16 points for the Spartans. Junior Peter Politi finished 14th in the consolation finals with a time of 1:56.91.
Also taking third place, sophomore Ian Clutten touched the wall in a time of 1:02.01 in the 100-meter breaststroke for 16 team points. Senior Mike Rigali also scored in the event with a time of 1:06.77.
In the 100-meter backstroke, sophomore Rudolf Wagenaar finished fourth with a time of 57.21. When converted to short-course yards, it marks Wagenaar's season-best time (51.26), while teammate Johan Sunryd placed eighth with a time of 58.16. Teammate Lucas Lehner rounded out scoring in the event with a time of 58.99.
In the 800-meter free relay, Matt Wisniewski, Politi, Vadney and Wagenaar combined for a time of 7:42.08 to place fifth and contribute 28 points in team scoring.
In the men's 200-meter medley relay, the Spartans placed two teams sixth and seventh, respectively. The sixth-place team of Lucas Lehner, Clutten, Nick Harley and Patrick Saucedo finished with a time of 1:44.35 while the seventh-place team of Sunryd, Rigali, Bryant Steele and David Lessard combined for a time of 1:45.58.
In the 100-meter fly, Steele finished sixth in the championship finals with a time of 56.68, scoring 13 team points. In short-course yards, his converted time of 50.79 is a season-best. Harley also contributed points in the event, finishing 14th in the consolation finals with a time of 58.18.
In the 400-meter IM, sophomore David Habel finished 11th in the consolation finals, scoring six team points in a time of 4:33.78.
In men's diving action, PJ Sheahan-Stahl finished ninth with a score of 246.05 on the one-meter board while Justin Laskowski finished 11th with a mark of 238.50. Matt Akerley rounded out the MSU divers with a mark of 204.55.
Action in the Indiana Invite continues Sunday, Nov. 23, at the Counsilman-Billingsley Aquatic Center in Bloomington, Ind.
