Men's and Women's Swimming Win Over Ball State

Muncie, Ind. - The Michigan State swimming and diving teams traveled to Muncie, Ind., Saturday (Nov. 15) to face Ball State. Both the men's and women's team came away victorious as the men's team won, 141-102, and the women's team won, 126-117.
"I'm really happy for the women, they have worked really hard and they deserved a win," said head coach Matt Gianiodis. "We left six strong swimmers at home and the girls that came did a nice job. I'm just really happy that they won."
On the men's side, MSU was paced by several first-place finishers. Rudolf Wagenaar scored in the first three events of the meet to push MSU out to an early lead. The 400-yard medley relay team of Wagenaar, Ian Clutten, Nick Harley and Matt Wisniewski took first in the event with a time of 3:27.16. David Habel and Wagenaar took first and second in the 1,000 freestyle with times of 9:47.05 and 9:52.34, respectively. Wagenaar took another runner-up spot in the 200 free (1:43.84).
Wisniewski took second in the 50 free, touching the wall with a time of :22.00, just .10 seconds off the pace set by Ball State's Erik Goodrich. Clutten (1:55.72) and Jason Vadney (1:58.20) took the top two spots in the 200 individual medley (IM). Spartans grabbed first and second in the 200 fly as Habel and Erik Williams scored points for State with times of 1:56.78 and 1:59.12. In the 100 free, Spartans finished in scoring position as Peter Politi finished second with a time of :48.05 and David Lessard touched the wall with a time of :48.88.
Wagenaar claimed another top spot in the 200 backstroke (1:52.59) while Johan Sunryd finished second with a time of 1:55.76. In the 500 free, Vadney and Habel took first and second spots with times of 4:41.67 and 4:46.40. Senior Mike Rigali won the 200 breast with a time of 2:08.63. To conclude the meet action, MSU's 400 freestyle relay team of Wisniewski, Patrick Saucedo, Vadney and Clutten finished second (3:10.21).
In diving action, Justin Laskowski took first on the three-meter board with a mark of 253.65 while freshman Matt Akerley contributed points with a mark of 250.85. In one-meter action, PJ Sheahan-Stahl finished second with a score of 270.95 and Laskowski finished third with a final score of 240.60.
For the women, Tesla Hughes took top honors in three events while Tammy Jones finished first in two individual events.
The women also got out to an early lead as the 400 medley relay team of Carly Zenk, Courtney Ellabarger, Tammy Jones and Eve Brusie finished with a time of 3:56.57. Hughes won the 1,000 free with a time of 10:29.92 and won her very next event, taking the top spot in the 200 free with a time of 1:56.43.
Hughes and Jones were not the only Spartan women taking first place finishes as freshman Eve Brusie continued her winning ways, winning the 50 free with a time of :24.63. Teammate Katrina Kniff finished second, just .05 seconds behind Brusie.
Jones won her first individual event, the 200 IM, touching the wall in 2:11.31 while Andrea Yocum finished third with a time of 2:12.90. Hughes won the 500 free with a time of 5:11.41. Ellabarger and Erika Templeton finished first and second in the 200 breaststroke with times of 2:21.99 and 2:24.14. The women's 400 free relay team of Lindsay Bockstiegel, Lindsay Rodin, Amber Schroeder and Dani Sawyer finished third with a time of 3:44.76 to round out swimming events for the meet.
In diving action, Katie Edwards (243.23) and Amy Schmidt (236.25) finished second and third, respectively, on the one-meter board. Edwards and Schmidt took first and second honors on the three-meter board with marks of 262.85 and 241.95, respectively.
"I was really impressed with Tesla Hughes," said Gianiodis. "David Habel, Jason Vadney, Chad Wilson - they all did a really nice job today. It will be nice to see how we do next weekend. We'll get a little rest this week and we'll go from there."
Both the men's and women's teams travel to Bloomington, Ind., for the Indiana Invite, Nov. 21-23.
