East Lansing, Mich. - Both the MSU men's and women's swimming and diving teams travel to Iowa to open the regular season against the Hawkeyes Friday, Oct. 24 at 2 p.m.
"It will be good to start the season against a Big Ten opponent," said interim head coach Matt Gianiodis. "Iowa runs a very good program. Our team is going to have to be very sharp to be able to compete with them."
The meets mark Gianiodis' first competition at the program's helm.
The Spartans' women's team ended the 2002-03 season in 11th place in the conference. The men finished in 10th place in the Big Ten. This season, Gianiodis and assistant coaches Kathleen Milloy, Eric Best and Richard Mull look forward to a talented crop of incoming freshmen and committed returners to lead Michigan State.
Ian Clutten returns to lead the men's team after an eighth place performance at the Big Ten Championships in 2003. The women's 400-freestyle relay team of Katrina Kniff, Alicia Copestick, Tammy Jones and Rachael Hagerman returns after breaking the school record at the Big Ten Championships to end the 2003 season.
The MSU men's team opens the home season Nov. 7 when it hosts Notre Dame. The meet is set to begin at 5 p.m., at the Charles McCaffree Pool in the IM West Building in East Lansing, Mich.
