EAST LANSING, Mich. - The Michigan State women's tennis team defeated Toledo 7-0 at the MSU Indoor Tennis Facility in East Lansing on Sunday (Jan. 26). The Spartans held the Rockets to only 21 games and did not lose a single set in taking their overall record to 2-2 on the season.
The Spartans gave up only three games in Sunday morning's double competition. Junior Caroline Lay (Brisbane, Australia) paired up with sophomore Keri Thompson (Clark Lake, Mich.) in the No. 1 position for the first time this season. They defeated Monica Ribero and Viviana Rivero 8-2. Thompson had a strong showing in her first singles action of the season as she blanked Daniella Moran 6-0, 6-0 at the No. 5 singles position. Lay was part of the MSU's toughest match of the day in which she defeated Monica Ribero 7-5, 6-2, at No. 1 singles.
"I felt confident and good throughout the match," said Lay. "I played my own game. I had to play defense because she liked to attack the ball. I was patient and just let my game come to me. It was a good day."
The freshman doubles team of Jean Willman (Alberton, Australia) and Shelley Brady (Grand Blanc) continued their winning ways as they topped Eunice Paravicini and Jen Meister 8-1 in the No. 2 doubles position to go 3-0 on the season. Willman also captured her third singles win of the season as she defeated Viviana Rivero 6-1, 6-4 at the No. 2 singles position. Brady won her second straight match in the No. 4 singles position as she cruised past Eunice Paravicini 6-0, 6-3.
"I feel like I played really well today," said Brady. "I've been working on moving the ball around and getting my serves and returns going. I felt more confident with my volleys and things are just coming together. We seem to be more team oriented and I feel we are headed in the right direction."
Senior ?sa Lid?n (Vanersborg, Sweden) paired up with junior Josie Schmude (Traverse City, Mich.) in No. 3 doubles competion for the first time. They defeated Eva Szuch and Daniella Moran 8-1. Lid?n also picked up her first singles win as she downed Eva Szuch 6-0, 6-1 in the No. 3 singles position.
