EAST LANSING, Mich. - The Michigan State women's tennis team improved its overall record to 3-2 and continued to stay unbeaten at home as it downed Bowling Green 7-0 Friday (Jan. 31) night. The Spartans have won 20 of their last 21 matches and will try to keep their winning streak alive as they host 2002 Mid-American Conference Champions Eastern Michigan tomorrow (Feb. 1).
"It's nice to be getting these dominant wins and to keep improving like we are," said head coach Tim Bauer. "Sometimes I think my players don't know how good they really are and to be dominant and get big wins deepens the well of self-confidence for big matches."
Although the Spartans dominated most of match play Friday night, freshman Shelley Brady (Grand Blanc) brought some excitement to the MSU Indoor Tennis Facility as she was forced to overcome a mental struggle and make a comeback against Bowling Green's Gaby Coello at the No. 4 singles position. Brady was forced to a three-set match after dropping the first set 6-7 (7-4). With some encouragement from her coaches, teammates and fans, Brady found her rhythm and won the first three games of the second set on her way to a 6-7 (7-4), 6-2, 6-2 victory.
"The win felt good but I had to work a little harder tonight," commented Brady. "It was all mental. She got under my skin at first because she was making great shots. I knew I just had to keep my head in it. Coach (Bauer) told me to just keep the ball up, switch up my shots and play like I do at practice. All the support helped boost me a bit and my game started to come together."
"It's nice to see the whole team come together to watch Shelley deal with the mental aspects of the game," added Bauer. "Other players can draw on what they learned from watching Shelley. Having a player struggle and have to come from behind to win helps us learn a lot as a team."
The Spartans will take on the Eagles of Eastern Michigan Saturday (Feb. 1) morning at 10 a.m. at the MSU Indoor Tennis Facility on Mt. Hope Road in East Lansing.
