EAST LANSING, Mich. - The Michigan State women's swimming and diving team trails a pair of nationally-ranked Big Ten schools following two sessions of competition on Jan. 24 at the Charles McCaffree Pool. The Spartans are currently behind No. 14 Indiana (68-42) and No. 20 Penn State (74-36) after five swimming events and the completion of the diving competition.
The double-dual competition opened with the diving events, as senior Stephanie Anisko (Mississauga, Ont.) finished third on the one-meter board behind Indiana's Sara Hildenbrand and Penn State's Lisa Silvestri. Anisko also earned points for the Spartans on the three-meter board, with a second-place finish against Penn State and a third-place mark against Indiana.
Freshman Rachael Hagerman (Goodland, Kan.) was the lone Spartan to tally a first-place finish during the first evening of swimming competition. Hagerman completed the 50-freestyle in a time of 23.74, to claim her sixth title of the season on that event.
The 400-medley relay team of Kate Duncombe (Erie, Pa.), Courtney Ellabarger (Carmel, Ind.), Tammy Jones (Conyers, Ga.) and Hagerman claimed a first-place mark over Indiana and finished second in the race against Penn State with a time of 3:51.99.
Michigan State recieved a second-place finish in their competition with Indiana and Penn State from senior Duncombe, who finished the 200 individual medley in a time of 2:05.79.
In the day's other results, Indiana leads Penn State by a margin of 61-49.
Michigan State returns to action tomorrow (Jan. 25) morning at 9:30 a.m., when the women continue the double-dual meet with the Hoosiers and Nittany Lions. The men take to the water for a match-up with Penn State at noon, before the women conclude their competition at 3 p.m. All meets will be held at the Charles McCaffree Pool in the IM West Building.
