COLUMBUS, Ohio - The Michigan State swimming and diving program split a dual-meet with Ohio State on Friday, Jan. 17, at the Mike Peppe Center in Columbus, Ohio. The MSU women defeated the Buckeyes, 138-105, while the men suffered a 147-96 setback to OSU. Together, the Spartans combined for 14 event titles - 11 individual races and three relays.
"It was a good win for the women," MSU head coach Jim Lutz said following the meet. "They had the meet under control. We had a lot of people stand up tonight. The guys swam tough and overall it was a good evening."
Even with travel delays due to road construction, the MSU women rolled off an impressive victory, claiming the fastest time in eight of the 11 swimming events. Both of the Spartans' relay teams claimed wins, as the 400 medley and freestyle relay teams finished first. The 400 medley squad of Kate Duncombe (Erie, Pa.), Courtney Ellabarger (Carmel, Ind.), Tammy Jones (Conyers, Ga.) and Rachael Hagerman (Goodland, Kan.) won their event in a time of 3:52.72. Hagerman teamed up with Katrina Kniff (Grand Rapids, Mich.), Sarah Urbanik (Bethel Park, Pa.) and Marsena Vranesic (Lebanon, Pa.) to win the 400 freestyle relay in a time of 3:34.28.
Hagerman and Duncombe each claimed a pair of individual event titles, while Jones added to her relay title with two individual titles. Hagerman won her fifth 50 freestyle event of the season in a time of 24.04, while Duncombe won the 200 backstroke in 2:05.24. Jones claimed event titles on both the 100 and 200 freestyle events, finishing in times of 52.53 and 1:53.26, respectively.
Also winning for the MSU women was senior Deb O'Neil (Chalfont, Pa.) and Erika Templeton (Canton, Ohio). O'Neil won the 500 freestyle in a time of 5:05.48, while Templeton claimed her first collegiate event title in the 200 breaststroke (2:23.50)
Joining Jones as a multi-event winner was Joe Brennan (Poway, Calif.) - the lone Spartan to win more than one individual event for the men. Brennan won the 200 and 500 freestyle events, finishing in times of 1:41.44 and 4:36.51, respectively.
The MSU men opened with three straight wins. The 400 medley relay squad of Karl Sunryd (Molndal, Sweden), Ian Clutten (Capetown, South Africa), David Sloan (Pittsburgh, Pa.) and Patrick Saucedo (Jackson, Mich.) finished in a time of 3:25.69. Freshman David Habel (Cincinnati, Ohio) won the 1650 freestyle in a time of 15:59.42, before Brennan picked up his win in the 200 free.
Ohio State won the next four swimming events and both diving events, before the Spartans rebounded with three of the final four event titles. Sunryd picked up a victory in the 100 backstroke with a winning time of 51.68 and Brennan claimed his 500 freestyle. Clutten rounded out the Spartan event titlists with a victory in the 100 breaststroke (56.50).
The Spartan men return to action tomorrow (Jan. 18), when they host No. 16 Pudue at 2 p.m., in the waters of the Charles McCaffree pool in the IM West Building.
