Gymnastics Finishes Third At MSU Invitational

The Michigan State women's gymnastics team opened the 2003 campaign with a third-place finish at the MSU Invitational on Friday, Jan. 10. The Spartans finished with a 191.800, behind No. 13 Oregon State (195.825) and Auburn (195.350).
The Spartans opened strong, with a 48.775 on the new vaulting table - the second highest team score on the apparatus. MSU continued with a 48.675 on the uneven bars, before stumbling to a 46.900 on the balance beam and a 47.450 on the floor exercise.
Michigan State's Sarah Alexander (Kernersville, N.C.) was impressive in her collegiate debut, finishing second on the vault, with a 9.825. Senior co-captain Christy Linder (Fremont, Ohio) finished with a 9.800 on the event to place third. The Spartans also claimed a top-three finish from Julie Devaty (North Olmstead, Ohio), as she claimed third on the balance beam, scoring a 9.875. Lauren Simpson (Fenton, Mich.) earned a fourth-place nod on the floor, garnering a 9.800.
The Spartans take to the road for the next two meets, beginning with a Jan. 17 showdown against No. 18 Iowa State in Ames, Iowa. The match, which is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m., will be held at the Hilton Coliseum.
