Men's Golf Places Third At The Northern Intercollegiate

Bloomington, Ind. - The No. 11 Michigan State men's golf team finished third at the Northern Intercollegiate Sunday (Sept. 29) at the University of Indiana Golf Course. The Spartans carded a tournament low round of 273 in Sunday's final round to give them a team score of 848 (294-281-273). Michigan State placed five shots behind tournament champion Illinois.
The Spartans were led by junior Casey Lubahn (Sand Lake, Mich.), who tied for fifth place overall. Lubahn's outstanding performance included two rounds of 70 and a 3-under par round of 68 in the final round. He finished five shots under par for the tournament with a score of 208 (70-70-68).
Sophomore Andrew Ruthkoski (Muskegon, Mich.) fired a team-low round of 67 on the day. Ruthkoski's 4-under par final round gave him a tournament score of 213 (74-72-67), good for a share of 14th place.
A final round of 67 was also shot by senior John Koskinen (Baraga, Mich.), who finished one stroke back of Ruthkoski with a score of 214 (75-71-68) and tied for 16th place.
Senior All-American Eric Jorgensen (Big Rapids, Mich.) carded a final round of 72 and finished with a tournament score of 215 (75-68-72). The 2002 Big Ten Champion tied for 20th place.
Junior Ben Fox (Fort Wayne, Ind.) shot an impressive 1-under par round of 70 for the day, which gave him a score of 220 (77-73-70) for the weekend. Junior J.J. Beckstrom (North Muskegon, Mich.) finished with a tournament score of 227 (82-65-80). Beckstrom's second round score of 65 is the lowest round recorded by a Spartan this year.
Michigan State returns to action Oct. 5-6 at the Wolverine Invitational in Ann Arbor, Mich.
