Women's Tennis Team Completes Day One Of Bronco Invitational

KALAMAZOO, Mich. - The Michigan State women's tennis team got its first taste of action Friday (Sept. 20) by opening its 2002 fall season at the Bronco Invitational in Kalamazoo, Mich. The tournament, hosted by Western Michigan, will run through Sunday (Sept. 22) at Sorensen Courts with matches starting each day at 9 a.m.
The Spartans, under the direction of fourth-year coach Tim Bauer are looking to improve on their national ranking of No. 62 and overall record of 11-12 from last season. The team returns five starters from last year's squad, which improved by three more victories than the previous two seasons combined.
Michigan State freshman Shelley Brady opened her Spartan career by defeating Marquette's Michelle Mojzis 6-2, 4-6, 1-0. Brady also paired up with sophomore Kate Thomas (Long Beach, Calif.) in doubles competition as they defeated Drake's De Bruyn/R. Thomas 8-6.
Michigan State, Ball State, Drake, Indiana, Marquette and Western Michigan are the six teams competing in the invitational that features a "hidden-dual" format. Teams will face each school in both singles and doubles throughout the weekend. No individual titles will be given out and final results do not count towards the team's overall record.
