EAST LANSING, Mich. - With the help of two goals and one assist by sophomore Jordan Gruber (Beverly Hills) the Michigan State men's soccer team defeated Wright State, 4-0, Sunday afternoon at Old College Field in its season opener in the MSU/Radisson Soccer Classic. Senior goalkeeper Tyler Robinson (Lansing) earned his first career shutout for MSU, making five saves.
"I thought in the first half, we were sluggish and didn't have much momentum," MSU head coach Joe Baum said. "In the second half, we created more chances and got some good offensive flow." MSU wasted little time getting on the scoreboard as junior Thomas Trivelloni (Mt. Clemens) scored unassisted just 1:30 into the game. Gruber then scored his first goal of the day off a pass from junior Kevin Wittig (Newton, PA). In the second half, senior Brett Konley (Plymouth) made it 3-0 when he socred on a breakaway. Gruber closed out the scoring at the 73:15 mark, also scoring on a breakaway.
"We started off shaky but came together at half time and really played MSU soccer in the second half," said Gruber. "The shutout is important because we pride ourselves in team defense."
MSU out-shot the Raiders by a count of 15-8. In the first game of the afternoon of the MSU/Radisson Soccer Classic, UC Santa Barbara defeated Michigan, 5-3.
The Spartans (1-0) return to action Monday (Sept. 2) when they host UC Santa Barbara at 12 p.m. at Old College Field. Michigan will face Wright State at 2:30 p.m.
