Michael Zaegel - Defense - St. Louis, Mo./Christian Brothers College High - Zaegel was the Defensive Player of the Year in the state of Missouri as a senior, while also earning All-Midwest region honors.
Coach Baum on Zaegel: "Mike is an excellent all-around player who will be an outstanding defender or top midfielder at the Division I level."
Michigan State University finished the 2001 season with a 13-6-1 overall record. The Spartans received an at large bid to the NCAA Tournament where they defeated Butler, 2-1, before losing to eventual National Runner Up Indiana, 1-0.
Though Michigan State is losing five seniors, only three were major contributors. Steve Arce was a two-time first-team All-Big Ten and first-team all-region honoree. MSU will also lose central midfielder Anders Kelto who played his last year of eligibility at MSU after playing three years at Brown University.
MSU men's soccer looks strong for the future. Michigan State is returning its top four scorers. Midfielder Jeff Krass (7 goals, 5 assists) leads the way. Forwards Brett Konley (7,4), Ryan McMahen (6,5), and Thomas Trivelloni (8,0) round out the top returning scorers. MSU also returns All-Big Ten honoree Nick DeGraw, former U-17 national team member Kellen Kalso, and junior goalkeeper Mike Robinson.
