Wolverines Defeat Men's Swimming and Diving, 137-99

ANN ARBOR, Mich. - The Michigan State men's swimming and diving team finished its regular season with a loss against No. 10 Michigan at the Canham Natatorium. The Spartans fell 137-99, but improved with four first-place finishes compared to being swept Friday night in a non-scoring meet against the Wolverines.
The Spartans' strongest event of the afternoon was the 200-yard breaststroke, where the team took first, second and third-place. Junior Joe Baicy (Cary, N.C/Apex High) won the event at 2:13.94, while junior Aaron Benore (Grand Blanc, Mich./Grand Blanc) followed at 2:17.74. Junior Dave Sloan (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Allegheny) placed third with a time of 2:18.37.
In other individual swim events, senior Aaron Mahaney (Easton, Pa./Easton Area) won the 200-yard butterfly with a time of 1:52.39 and junior Joe Brennan (Poway, Calif./Rancho Bernardo) took first in the 500 freestyle at 4:37.07.
The men's 400 free relay also fared well, taking first-place with a time of 3:09.72. The members of the team were Scott Shafer (Centerville, Va./Chantilly), Peter Politi (Newburgh, N.Y./Newburgh Free Academy), Joel Hageman (Fort Wayne, Ind./Homestead), and Brennan.
Junior Nick Visscher (Holland, Mich./Holland) finished as MSU's top diver. In the one-meter, Visscher placed second at 270.00, and took third in the three-meter board, scoring 259.80 points.
The Spartans will conclude the conference season at the 2002 Big Ten Championships in Bloomington, Ind., Feb. 28-March 2.
