Men's Swimming Shutout In Exhibition Meet With Michigan

ANN ARBOR, Mich. - In an exhibition dual meet to prepare for the Big Ten Championships, the Michigan State Spartans fell to No. 10 Michigan in a non-scoring competition Friday evening (Feb. 8). The Wolverines won all eight events.
State was able to pick up three second place finishes. Junior Matt Wallace (Bloomfield Hills, Mich.) lost by only .71 seconds in the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 51.68. Two relay teams also placed second for MSU. Senior Scott Shafer (Centerville, Va.), junior Nicholas DeFauw (West Bloomfield, Mich.), sophomore Joel Hageman (Fort Wayne, Ind.) and freshman Patrick Saucedo (Jackson, Mich.) fell in the 200-yard freestyle 1:22.21 to 1:24.89 while the 800-yard freestyle relay team of Shafer, senior Aaron Mahaney (Easton, Pa.), junior Joe Brennan (Poway, Calif.) and freshman Peter Politi (Newburgh, N.Y.) recorded a second-place time of 6:48.85.
The Spartans and Wolverines will go head-to-head once again in a team-scoring event Saturday (Feb. 9) at noon in Ann Arbor. This will mark the end of the regular season for the men's team as the Big Ten Championships is slated to begin February 28 in Bloomington, Ind.
