The Michigan State men's and women's swimming and diving teams are on a competitive break until Thursday, Dec. 19, when the Spartans take on California-Irvine at noon. The meet will be part of the squad's ten-day winter training trip to California (Dec. 13-22).
COACHES' CORNER
"This trip will be a good opportunity for some serious training," MSU head coach Jim Lutz stated, while previewing the upcoming training trip to California. "This will be a good time for us to bond. The stress of finals will be over and we can just relax. The meet against UC-Irvine will be part of the trip, but it is not the focal point. This is our chance to get some, good solid training before we break for the holidays."
BIG TEN SPLASH
Michigan State has a large number of swimmers that are ranked among the 20 fastest swimmers in the Big Ten heading into the winter break. Two freshmen lead the way for the Green and White, ranking first in their respective events. David Sloan tops the men's conference in the 400 IM, swimming at a time of 3:54.52. Rachael Hagerman also earned fastest honors in the 50 free, finishing in 23.58 on Nov. 22. Kate Duncombe ranks second in the 100 backstroke, in a time of 56.07.
TOPPING THE CHARTS
Members of the Spartan swim team are ranked among the nation's best in the most recent rankings of the "College Quick 50" by Taper & Shave. Four individual swimmers were recognized for their speed, while MSU placed a relay team in every list. Joe Brennan and Ian Clutten lead the Spartans with two Top-50 times apiece. Clutten is the highest-ranking Spartan with an 11th-place time in the 100 breaststroke - just .01 seconds shy of a top-ten spot.
