EAST LANSING, Mich. - The Michigan State men's swimming and diving team took on in-state rival, the University of Michigan Saturday afternoon (Nov. 9) for its annual duel meet. Coming off of last night's loss to Notre Dame, the Spartans' regrouped and won five events, but still fell to the Wolverines, 145-98.
Senior captain Joe Brennan (Poway, Calif.) won two events for the Spartans in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:40.56 and the 500-yard freestyle with 4:34.48. Senior Nick DeFauw (West Bloomfield, Mich.) also picked up a win in the 50-yard freestyle (21.65).
Sophomore Peter Politi (Newburgh, N.Y.) was second in the 100-yard freestyle in a time of 47.72, while freshman Rudolf Wagenaar (Capetown, South Africa) also placed second in the 200-yard backstroke in 1:54.24.
DeFauw and Brennan combined with junior Mike Rigali (Naperville, Ill.) and freshman Nick Harley (Rockford, Mich.) for a second-place finish in the 200-yard freestyle relay in a time of 1:25.94. The 200-yard medley relay team also placed second with a time of 1:35:53. The 200 medley team consisted of Karl Sunryd (Molndal, Sweden), Ian Clutten (Capetown, South Africa), Harley and Rigali.
Spartan newcomer Clutten stepped up and took the 200-yard breaststroke with a winning time of 2:05. The final win for MSU came when sophomore Justin Laskowski (Bay City, Mich.) took first place in the 3-meter dive with a score of 275.93.
Coach Jim Lutz said that he is very pleased with the team performance.
"We achieved our objective- which was to do our in season best times," commented Lutz. "The freshman did a great job and the team feels good about getting up and facing today's challenge."
The men's swimming and diving team hosts its second home meet this coming Friday (Nov. 15), at 6 p.m., against Eastern Michigan at the Charles McCaffree Pool on the Michigan State campus.
