Swimming and Diving Falls To Notre Dame

SOUTH BEND, Ind. - Michigan State men's and women's swimming and diving teams fell to Notre Dame on Friday, Nov. 8, at the Rolfs Aqautic Center in South Bend, Ind. The men suffered a 140.5-102.5 setback to the Fighting Irish, while the women were defeated 181-119.
The Spartans combined for 33 top-three finishes, including ten first-place titles. Kate Duncombe (Erie, Pa.) paced Michigan State with two titles, finishing first in both backstroke events. Duncombe's time in the 100 back was 57.67, followed by a 2:04.87 in the 200. Joe Brennan (Poway, Calif.) gave the Spartan men their first title of the night, winning the 1000 free in a time of 9:33.56.
Freshman Rachael Hagerman (Goodland, Kan.) earned her first collegiate event win, posting a 24:05 in the 50 free. Freshman David Habel (Cincinnati, Ohio) captured the first win of his career, finishing first in the 500 free with a time of 4:39.89. Ian Clutten (Capetown, South Africa) continued his impressive freshman season with a first-place finish in the 22 breaststroke and a time of 2:05.59.
Michigan State claimed two victories in the diving well, as Stephanie Anisko (Mississauga, Ont.) and Nick Visscher (Holland, Mich.) won the three-meter and one-meter dives, respectively. Anisko posted a 262.97, while Visscher earned a 271.35 for his first title of the season.
The Spartans also captured first-place victories in both the men's and women's 400 medley relays. The women's squad of Tammy Jones (Conyers, Ga.), Hagerman, Marsena Vranesic (Lebanon, Pa.) and Katrina Kniff (Grand Rapids, Mich.) swam the event in 3:35.90, while Nick Harley (Rockford, Mich.), Nick DeFauw (West Bloomfield, Mich.), Michael Rigali (Naperville, Ill.) and Matt Wisniewski (Plymouth, Mich.) won the men's relay in 3:11.15.
The Spartans provided a one-two punch on the three-meter dives, as Justin Laskowski (Bay City, Mich.) finished second behind Visscher. Anisko and sophomore Diana Anderson (Grosse Pointe, Mich.) finished second and third on the one-meter boards, while Patrick Sheahan-Stahl (Mt. Pleasant, Mich.), Laskowski and Visscher ended second, third and fourth on the same board.
Michigan State tallied 13 second-place and 10 third-place finishes during the course of the evening.
The Spartan men take to the water tomorrow (Nov. 9) at 1 p.m., hosting Michigan in the first home meet of the season at the Charles McCaffree Pool in East Lansing, Mich. The women return to action next weekend, as both squads host Eastern Michigan on Nov. 15 at 6 p.m.
