EAST LANSING, Mich. - Michigan State men's golf coach Mark Hankins has announced that three golfers have signed National Letters of Intent to attend Michigan State next fall and play for the Spartan golf team.
"This is a very important recruiting class for the Michigan State men's golf program," said Hankins. "Replacing two top seniors to carry on the winning tradition that we have created in the past two years is a difficult task. I expect each of these recruits to make an immediate impact. They all fit nicely with our current team and will help to raise the bar even higher on the national level."
The signees include Matthew Harmon (Grand Rapids/East Kentwood High School), Tristan Lester (Plymouth/Redford Catholic Central) and Craig Revell (Kingston, Ont./Frontenac S.S.).
Matthew HarmonHarmon, a back-to-back Division I State Champion (2001-02), is one the nation's most highly-touted high school golfers. He is ranked 27th in the class of 2003 and 36th among juniors in the United States, making him the highest ranked junior amateur in Michigan. As captain of the East Kentwood golf team, he led his team to the Division I State Championship in 2001 and a trip to the state finals in 2002. Harmon, a member of the Boys Super Team comprised of the state's top eight golfers, is a strong candidate for the 2002 Mr. Golf Award. Over the last three years, Harmon has participated in numerous national amateur events. Since capturing his first national victory at the PGA National Junior Series at Cherry Creek on June 23, 2000, Harmon has compiled at least six first-place tournament finishes. At the 2002 U.S. Junior Amateur, he placed seventh in stroke play and advanced to the Sweet 16 in match play.
Hankins on Harmon: "Matt is a very accomplished golfer that has unlimited potential. His improvement over the past four years, the ability to play well in big tournaments and his natural athletic ability, make him one of the top golf prospects in the country."
Tristan LesterLester, an All-Catholic selection for three consecutive years (2000-02), averaged 36 strokes per nine holes at Redford Catholic Central. In addition to earning three consecutive team MVP honors, Lester served as the captain for the last three years. As a sophomore, he placed fifth at the State Championships. This year, he led Redford Catholic Central to a seventh-place finish at the State Finals and finished 11th as an individual. Last winter Lester played on the Nike Winter National Tour and was named to the Nike All-American team. Lester represented Team USA at the 2002 World Junior Golf Cup in Scotland. While in Scotland, he fired a round of 69 at the Old Course at St. Andrews. In August of 2001, Lester placed second and helped Team Michigan capture the Williamson Cup of Delaware.
Hankins on Lester: "Tristan's experience throughout the country and abroad has made him a well-rounded player. His athletic ability, leadership qualities and desire to be the best will compliment our entire team."
Craig RevellRevell is ranked 60th in United States for the class of 2003, making him the top ranked junior amateur in Ontario. He finished 11 strokes under par to win the 2002 Ontario Junior Championship in July. Revell is one of four members of the Canadian Junior National Team. He captured third place at the Ontario Men's Amateur and carded rounds of 75 and 74 in the U.S. Junior Amateur at the Atlanta Athletic club this summer.
Hankins on Revell: "Craig is the highest ranked junior in Ontario and has gained significant international experience playing on the Canadian Junior National Team. He is an excellent competitor and has shown amazing consistency while playing an extensive national-level schedule in the United States and Canada."
