EAST LANSING, Mich. - Head coach Gene Orlando recently added more experience to the Michigan State men's tennis program this season by hiring Albin Polonyi as his new assistant coach to help with all aspects of the team. Polonyi replaces Brian Etzkin, who after two years with MSU traveled to his hometown to take command of the Cleveland State men's and women's teams.
Polonyi comes to Michigan State this fall following two years working as an assistant professional at the Gasparilla Inn in Boca Grande, Fla. His former assistant coaching duties include guiding the Bemidji State women's team to its first conference championship in school history during the 1998-99 season.
"Albin Polonyi will add his winning ways to our program," said Orlando. "His intensity and drive to win will definitely help our team aspire to new levels."
Polonyi is a two-time All-American (1993, 1996) who captained the 1997 Boise State Broncos to a No. 7 national ranking while playing two years under 1997 NCAA Coach of the Year Greg Patton. Before coming to Boise State, he played at the University of Georgia. With the Bulldogs, he was a starter who helped the team to No. 2 and No. 5 national rankings in 1993 and 1994, respectively. In 1993, Polonyi reached the semifinals in the NCAA Doubles Championships. He was the Rolex Region III singles and doubles champion in 1996 and has experience competing on the Pro Circuit.
