KALAMAZOO, Mich. - Nick DeGraw (Jr., Clinton Twp.) scored twice only 1:31 apart late in the first half to help lead the Michigan State men's soccer team past Western Michigan, 4-1, Wednesday (Oct. 23) afternoon in Kalamazoo. MSU improved to 10-5 overall with the win while Western dropped to 3-9-2 on the season. It marks the third consecutive season MSU has recorded 10 or more wins.
DeGraw's first goal of the day came at the 33:20 mark off a shot from 18 yards out that sailed just inside the left post. His second goal, just 1:31 later, also found its way inside the left post. Jordan Gruber (So., Beverly Hills) and Craig Hearn (Jr., Farmington Hills) assisted, respectively, on DeGraw's goals.
Scott Babinski (Sr., Livonia) scored his first goal of the season in the 61st minute to give State a comfortable 3-0 lead. The goal came off a free kick from 35 yards out. A mishandled ball by WMU goalkeeper Ian Spooner found its way into the back of the net in the 77th minute to boost MSU's lead to 4-0.
The Broncos broke MSU starting goalkeeper Tyler Robinson's (Sr., Lansing) shutout bid at the 80:44 mark as Chad Wiseman scored to make the final score 4-1. Robinson finished with eight saves before Mike Robinson (Jr., Troy) relieved him just after the Bronco goal.
MSU hosts its Big Ten and home finale, Sunday (Oct. 27) at 1:00 p.m. when it takes on Wisconsin. Prior to the game, State's six seniors will be honored.
