Boilermakers Defeat Spartan Swimming and Diving Team In West Lafayette

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The Michigan State men's and women's swimming and diving teams fell to Purdue at the Doris Z. Holloway Pool in West Lafayette, Ind., Saturday. The men's team scored 115.5 points against the Boilermakers'184.5, while the MSU women lost 187.5-112.5. Although both Michigan State teams suffered losses, the Spartans came back to East Lansing, Mich., with three new Purdue pool records.
Senior Carly Weiden (Kentwood, Mich./East Kentwood) won the one-meter dive with a pool record-breaking score of 304.87. She also took second on the three-meter board at 278.2. Weiden earned 13 points overall for the Spartans.
Men's diving also was successful as Nick Visscher (Holland, Mich./Holland) scored a Holloway pool-record 291.67 to win the one-meter dive. Visscher took second in the three-meter board with a score of 272.40.
In individual swim events, the MSU men dominated the 200-yard freestyle. Joe Brennan (Poway, Calif./Rancho Bernardo) won the event with a time of 1:41.04 to break the Purdue pool record, while teammate Scott Shafer (Centerville, Pa./Chantilly) took second at 1:41.27. Brennan also won the 500 free with a time of 4:37.53.
Freshman Jen Windstein (Lancaster, Pa./Hempfield) gave the Spartan women's team 21.5 points out of its 112.5 total. She took first place in both the 1000 free (10:13.58) and the 500 free (5:01.44) and finished second in the 200 free (1:54.98). Ildiko Szekely (Budapest, Hungary/Mercersburg Academy) was another key MSU swimmer, winning both the 200 butterfly at 2:03.30 and the 100 fly at 57.21.
The men's team returns to action on Friday, Jan. 18 at Oakland University at 6:30 p.m. The Spartan women will face Michigan on Saturday, Jan. 19 at 2 p.m. in East Lansing.
