EAST LANSING, Mich. - The Michigan State women's soccer team (4-3-2, 1-2-1) defeated Northwestern (2-5-1, 1-2-1), 1-0, on Sunday afternoon at Old College Field in East Lansing. Michigan State goalkeeper Stacy Heller (Madison, Wis.) recorded her second shutout of the weekend as the Spartans earned their first win of the Big Ten season.
Both teams battled back and forth in a scoreless first half. Michigan State had a great chance to take a 1-0 lead into intermission, but Northwestern goalkeeper Susan McCreery made a diving save on a penalty kick by Andrea Sied (Livonia, Mich.) in the 41st minute.
The second half was also evenly matched until the 68th minute. On a restart after a Northwestern foul, Amy Allen (Grand Blanc, Mich.) found Tiffany Laskowski (Troy, Mich.) streaking down the middle of the field. Just inside the 18-yard box, Laskowski lofted the ball over McCreery into the back of the Northwestern net at 67:55. For Laskowski, it was her team-best fifth goal of the season and the Spartans' first in Big Ten action.
For the second-straight game, Heller was outstanding in the Spartan goal. She recorded six saves in her second-straight Big Ten game. It also marked her third shutout of the season.
"We wanted to be more offensive minded today, and I think we succeeded in that," said MSU coach Tom Saxton. "We showed some patience on offense and I can't say enough about Stacy Heller's performance. I think people around the Big Ten will soon learn what type of player she is. We are a young team that is starting to come together as a group."
Michigan State returns to action on Friday, Oct. 5 at 6 p.m. EDT at Penn State.
