Women's Tennis Completes First Day of The Spartan Cup

EAST LANSING, Mich. - The young Michigan State women's tennis team got its first taste of action this season, as the Spartans hosted day one of The Spartan Cup Friday at the MSU Outdoor Tennis Courts.
Four MSU players have advanced to the quarterfinal round of the singles B flight. Sophomore Josie Schmude and freshman Karen Gustafson each won twice on Friday, while freshmen Jehan Patel and Mandy Caldemeyer each won once after receiving byes in the opening round.
In the singles A flight, freshmen Kate Thomas and Dora Vastag and junior Asa Liden all won their opening match before falling in the round of 16. Sophomore Caroline Lay lost in the round of 16 after getting a bye in round one, and freshman Keri Thompson fell in the opening round. Lay rallied to win in the first round of the consolation bracket.
Also competing in singles for MSU were senior Amanda McGinnis and freshman Melinda Carlson, who both dropped matches in the opening round of the singles B flight. Carlson also fell in the first round of the consolation bracket.
In the doubles A flight, Lay and Thompson won their opening match 8-1, while Caldemeyer and Thomas won in the first round of the B flight, 8-0. Gustafson and McGinnis dropped a B flight opening round match, while Patel and Schmude lost in the B flight quarterfinal round.
Competition continues with the second of three days Saturday.
