EAST LANSING, Mich. - The Michigan State women's tennis team will open the 2001 Fall Season by hosting The Spartan Cup Friday-Sunday (Sept. 28-30) at the MSU Outdoor Tennis Courts. Matches are set to begin at 9 a.m. each day.
Competing in The Spartan Cup along with Michigan State will be Denver, Eastern Michigan, Miami (Ohio), Toledo and Valparaiso. There will be A and B singles flights, as well as A and B doubles flights. The singles flights will also have consolation brackets.
With a roster that includes just three returning letterwinners and nine freshmen, several Spartans will get their first taste of collegiate tennis competition this weekend. Sophomore Caroline Lay (Brisbane, Australia) had six singles wins last spring to post the most wins of any returning player, while Amanda McGinnis (East Lansing, Mich.) is the lone senior on the squad. Sophomore Josie Schmude (Traverse City, Mich.) was a regular in last year's lineup as well, earning wins at No. 2 and 3 singles.
