East Lansing, Mich. - The Spartan men's soccer team escaped Sunday afternoon with a 2-1 victory over Robert Morris at Old College Field. The win improved MSU's record to 2-0 on the young season. Brett Konley (Jr., Plymouth) scored in the 62nd minute to give MSU the win. For Konley, it was his third goal in two games this weekend.
"It was a good weekend for us," said Konley. "We played real well, although, we struggled today. We did what we wanted to do, come out and win."
State took the lead in the first half when Nick DeGraw (Jr., Clinton Twp.) scored on a penalty kick. Robert Morris' Rhian Dodds later tied the game in the second half on an unassisted goal. The Colonials came within inches of tying the game in the last 10 second when a shot from just outside the box deflected off the crossbar.
"Today I thought both teams were tired and it was sloppy soccer," said MSU head coach Joe Baum. "We played good team defense today and we showed some character by coming back and winning."
The Spartans' next action will take place Friday, Sept. 7 at 5:30 p.m. when they host Bowling Green.
