East Lansing, Mich. - MSU head soccer coach Joe Baum captured his 300th career victory at Michigan State (1-0), defeating Wisconsin-Green Bay (0-1), 6-1, Saturday afternoon at Old College Field.
"It's hard to believe, it went by so fast," said Baum of his 300th victory. "I've been fortunate to work at a great university. Right now, I'm just overwhelmed. It's a real satisfying feeling."
The six goals were the most scored in an opener since 1985 when they found the back of the net seven times against Eastern Michigan.
The Spartans struck just 9:19 into the game when John Minagawa-Webster (So., Monroe) scored on a volley off a free kick from Steve Arce (Sr., Windsor, Ont.). Brett Konley (Jr., Plymouth) scored his first goal of the day off a cross in front from Ryan McMahen (Fr., Munster, Ind.). State struck again off a free kick when Arce beat UW-Green Bay keeper Trevor Commons in the upper left corner to make the score 3-0.
After the Phoenix made it 3-1, then Konley added his second goal of the game followed by Jeff Krass (So., Brighton) who made it 5-1. McMahen assisted on Krass' goal, giving him three assists on the day. Thomas Trivelloni (So., Mt. Clemens) closed out the scoring at the 78:12 mark to give MSU a 6-1 victory.
"I'm amazed we scored six today against them," said Baum. "The guys were real hungry and were pumped up to open the season at home. We played great team defense and I was real pleased with our performance overall."
State will host Robert Morris tomorrow at 3 p.m. at Old College Field.
