MSU Duo Advances At National Outdoor Diving Championships

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. - The Michigan State diving tandem of Summer Mitchell (Troy, Mich.) and Carly Weiden (Kentwood, Mich.) opened the 2001 Speedo National Outdoor Diving Championships by placing third in today's 3-meter synchronized diving preliminaries at the International Swimming Hall of Fame. The top six teams advance to Sunday's finals.
Mitchell, a junior-to-be, and Weiden, who will be a senior this year, posted a score of 226.62, trailing the teams of Lane Bassham and Lauryn McCalley (258.87 points) and Nicole Bolt and Chelsie Lerew (246.42 points). Bassham and McCalley are the defending indoor and outdoor national champions in the three-meter synchronized dive.
Tomorrow's competition features the quarterfinals and semifinals of the men's 3-meter and women's platform events. Mitchell and Weiden will not compete until Thursday, when the women's 3-meter competition takes place. Both divers are also scheduled to take part in Friday's 1-meter preliminaries.
