MSU Divers Continue On At U.S. Nationals

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. - Michigan State University divers Carly Weiden (Kentwood, Mich.) and Summer Mitchell (Troy, Mich.) came up short in their attempts to move into the women's 3-meter finals at the U.S. Outdoor National Diving Championships Friday. Mitchell, a junior-to-be, was ousted in the quarterfinals, posting a score of 227.31, good for 21st place overall. The top 18 divers advanced to the semifinals. Weiden, who will be a senior at MSU in 2001-02, was among the semifinal qualifiers and finished 15th overall with a score of 417.54. The top eight divers move on to Sunday's finals. Mitchell and Weiden will take part in Sunday's 3-meter synchronized diving finals. The Spartan duo placed third in Tuesday's preliminaries.
