Penn State Defeats Women's Tennis in First Round

COLUMBUS, Ohio - The No. 11-seed Michigan State women's tennis team lost to No. 6 Penn State Thursday (Apr. 26) in the first round of the Big Ten Championships at the Stickney Tennis Center, 4-0.
Penn State swept the doubles competition to take a 1-0 lead into singles play. At the No. 1 position, PSU's Rebecca Ho and Pilar Montgomery defeated freshmen Trine Lise Juliussen (Oslo, Norway) and Caroline Lay (Brisbane, Australia) 8-1.
In singles play, Penn State won three singles matches to take the 4-0 advantage and the win. At the No. 3 position, Judy Wang (PSU) defeated Juliussen 6-3, 6-3. In the No. 5 position Kristen Nowicki posted a 6-1, 6-1 win over junior Christee Chargot (Port Huron, Mich.). LeighAnn Merryman (PSU) defeated freshman Josie Schmude 6-2, 6-0 in the No. 6 spot. The other three singles matches were abandoned.
Penn State moves on to the next round to face No. 3 seed Indiana tomorrow at 2 p.m. The Spartans finish the season 6-16 overall and 0-11 in the Big Ten.
