RAVENNA, Ohio - The Michigan State men's golf team finished in second place Saturday (April 21) at the FirstEnergy Intercollegiate. The Spartans recorded a team score of 288 for a two round total of 584. Michigan's State's impressive performance placed them ten shots back of tournament champion and host Kent State, who finished with a 574 (293-281). The FirstEnergy Intercollegiate was played at Windmill Lakes Golf Club, a par-70, 6,936-yard layout, where 19 schools competed this weekend. The tournament was reduced to 36 holes due to casual water on the course Friday (April 20).
Michigan State improved its team score by eight shots in Saturday's final round, as three Spartans were able to shoot lower rounds than they did Friday. Spartan head coach Mark Hankins was satisfied with his team's play Saturday, for this was the first time his team had competed at Windmill Lakes Golf Club.
The team was led by senior co-captain Brent Goik (Bay City, Mich.), who finished in a tie for fifth place overall. Goik carded a 72 Saturday and finished with a 143 (71-72) for the weekend. Kent State's Jon Mills was the top individual performer at 134 (68-66).
The Spartans also received a solid performance from junior Nathan Clark (Mason, Mich.). Clark, who did not participate in last week's Robert Kepler Invitational, shot a 72 Saturday, which gave him a final score of 145 (73-72) for the tournament.
Sophomore Eric Jorgensen (Big rapids, Mich.) turned in the team's best performance of the day. Jorgensen recorded a final round score of 70, which was eight shots better than his Friday score. He finished the weekend with a 148 (78-70)
Senior co-captain Dennis Riedel (St. Clair, Mich.), who is coming off a sixth-place finish at the Robert Kepler Intercollegiate last week (April 14-15), carded a 75 for both days of the tournament. He finished the weekend with a 150 (75-75).
Sophomore John Koskinen (Baraga, Mich.) was able to shave three strokes off his first round score of 77, to shoot a 74 on Saturday. Koskinen recorded a 151 for the tournament.
Next week (April 28-29) the Spartans are home to host the Bruce Fossum/TeamGearOnline.com Invitational at Forest Akers West Golf Course on the campus of Michigan State University. Action will began Saturday morning. It will be the only chance to catch the Spartan men's golf team at home this year.
