EAST LANSING, Mich. - The Michigan State men's golf team will travel to Columbus, Ohio, this weekend (April 14-15) to participate in the Robert Kepler Intercollegiate, hosted by Ohio State University. The Spartans will look to improve upon last year's showing, in which they finished in a 14th-place tie. The Robert Kepler Intercollegiate will be Michigan State's third tournament of the spring.
Michigan State enters this weekend's tournament well rested. Its last action came at the Dr. Pepper Intercollegiate on March 24th and March 25th, where the Spartans finished tied for third place. The Spartans were led by senior co-captains Brent Goik (Bay City, Mich.) and Dennis Riedel (St. Clair, Mich.), who each finished tied for 14th place and shot 149 respectively. This weekend, the team will look for strong performances from both senior captains along with sophomore John Koskinen (Baraga, Mich.), who has been a solid contributor this spring, including a top-five finish at the Big Red Classic.
Michigan State is looking forward to this weekend's Kepler Intercollegiate, which features nine Big Ten schools. "The top teams in the district are all involved," said Michigan State head coach Mark Hankins of this year's 17-team field. The tournament will also have bearing on the approaching post season, where the last spots remain unfilled for the NCAA Regionals. Therefore this will be an important tournament for the Spartans, ranked 87th according to GolfStat.com.
The tournament will be played on Ohio State's Scarlet Course (7,251 yards, par 72). Action will begin Saturday, (April 14) with an 8:00 a.m. shotgun start. Round two will begin at 12:30 in the afternoon. The final round will be played on Sunday (April 15).
