BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The Michigan State men's soccer team fell to fifth-ranked Indiana Sunday afternoon in the second round of the NCAA Tournament in Bloomington, Ind., by a score of 1-0. The Spartans finish the season with a record of 13-6-1, their best mark since 1986 when they went 13-7-1.
Indiana struck first when the Spartans committed a foul inside the box, giving the Hoosiers a penalty kick, which Tyler Hawley converted at the 11:24 mark giving IU the early 1-0 lead.
The Spartans created scoring chances late in the first half, pressuring the Hoosiers deep in their end. Thomas Trivelloni (So., Mt. Clemens) and John Minagawa-Webster (So., Monroe) each had shots on goal inside the box. Later, Anders Kelto (Sr., Traverse City) connected on a pass from Steve Arce (Sr., Windsor, Ont.) but hit the crossbar, keeping the game 1-0. Indiana out-shot the Spartans by a count of 8-6 in the first half. Spartan goalkeeper Mike Robinson (So., Troy) made two saves in the half.
Each team had its share of offensive oportunites in the beginning of the second half, however, IU goalkeeper Colin Rogers and MSU's Robinson each made stops when called upon. The Spartans pressured the Hoosiers late, but were unable to find the net for the tying goal.
"I'm real proud of this team." Said MSU head coach Joe Baum. "We set a goal at the beginning of the season to get to the tournament. I thought we represented the University real well this weekend, so I am real proud of the team and I am pleased with what we accomplished this year."
"They (Indiana) are a great defensive team," said Baum. "You have to give them credit. I thought we created some wonderful chances today and they had some big plays by their defensive backfield."
Robinson finished the game for the Spartans with six saves.
