EAST LANSING, Mich. - The two-day MSU Open wrestling tournament concluded Sunday afternoon (Nov. 18) at Jenison Field House on the MSU campus. The Spartans had three wrestlers finish in second place in the tournament, which featured 18 schools and 300 wrestlers from around the country. Jason Borelli of Central Michigan was named the tournament's most outstanding wrestler, while Ohio State's Josh Janson had the most falls (4 falls, 6:32). The open had no team scoring.
In the 125-pound bracket, senior co-captain Chris Williams (Perry, Mich.) lost his semifinal match to Central Michigan's Jason Borelli, 5-2. As a result, Borelli advanced to the championship where he met freshman Nick Simmons (Williamston, Mich.). Simmons defeated Michigan All-American A.J. Grant 6-0 in the semifinals. Borelli, however, was crowned champion after a heated match with Simmons. The final score was 9-6. Simmons finished as the runner-up while Williams placed fifth as he won his wrestle-back match, 4-0.
Junior Charlie Sageman (Saginaw, Mich.) and freshman Shane Martin (DeWitt, Mich.) represented the Spartans in the 141-pound semifinals. Sageman finished in fifth place while Martin claimed second. Due to an injury to Michigan's Ryan Churella, Martin advanced to the championship where he fell to John Giacche of Northwestern.
In the 149-pound bracket, junior Karl Nadolsky (Holland, Mich.) earned a third-place finish as he won two wrestle-back matches, 10-3 and 3-1. Mike Kulczcki of Michigan was the 149-pound champion.
The 157-pound semifinals featured junior Gray Maynard (Las Vegas, Nev.). Maynard defeated Michigan's Mark Churella in a wrestle-back match by a score of 7-5 and finished in fourth place.
Former junior college champion Anton Hall (Jr., Ada, Michigan) finished in third place in the 165-pound bracket as he won the wrestle-back bracket.
Junior Rashad Evans was the runner-up in the 174-pound bracket. Junior Nik Fekete (Cranford, N.J.) finished sixth. Fekete was forced to withdraw due to injury after he lost in the semifinals.
"This is a very tough tournament with a lot of good teams," said MSU head coach Tom Minkel. "We host this tournament so we can get ready for the regular season. This helps us recognize where we are as a team. Our kids have gotten a lot of valuable experience the past couple of weeks which will help us prepare for Central Michigan."
Michigan State returns to action for its first dual meet of the season Wednesday, Nov. 28, to face Central Michigan in Mt. Pleasant, Mich. The meet begins at 7:30 p.m. at Rose Arena.
