MADISON, Wis. - Two second half goals by Indiana proved to be the difference as the Hoosiers downed the Spartans 2-0 Sunday afternoon in the Big Ten Men's Soccer Tournament finals held in Madison, Wis. Michigan State finishes the season 12-5-1 and and still has a shot at qualifying for the NCAA Soccer Tournament. The Spartans' 12 wins are the most since 1996 when they also won 12 games.
The Spartans withstood a high-powered Indiana offensive attack in the first half, yielding nine shots. Michigan State goalkeeper Mike Robinson (So., Troy) kept MSU in the game, making three saves in the half.
MSU applied more pressure in the second half, outshooting IU, 5-4 but the Hoosiers' Michael Bock broke the stalemate, scoring the game-winning goal in the 68th minute. Just eight minutes later John Swann sealed the game for IU, scoring in the 76th minute.
Robinson finished the game with four saves for MSU. Nick DeGraw (Jr., Clinton Twp.) and Paul Vance (Sr., Flint) each registered two shots for the Green and White.
With the win, Indiana automatically qualifies for NCAA post-season play while MSU will hope to earn a spot in the 48-team field when it is announced Nov. 19.
