East Lansing, Mich. - Three second-half goals and a seven-save performance from goalkeeper Mike Robinson (So., Troy) lifted the Michigan State men's soccer team over No. 15 Ohio State, 3-0, Sunday afternoon at Old College Field. MSU is now 6-2-1 overall and 2-1 in the Big Ten while OSU falls to 6-2-1 and 1-1 in conference play.
The two teams played an even first half with the Spartans holding a slight 6-4 advantage in shots while also generating two quality scoring opportunities.
John Minagawa-Webster (So., Monroe) scored what proved to be the game-winner in the 54th minute, slipping behind the defense and scoring off a header from Steve Arce (Sr., Windsor, Ont.). A three-on-one break resulted in a Bret Konley (Jr., Plymouth) goal in the 79th minute, making the score 2-0 MSU. Arce and Ryan McMahen (Fr., Munster, Ind.) assisted on the goal. Jordan Gruber (Fr., Beverly Hills) sealed the game for State, scoring at 89:43 on a assist from Paul Vance (Sr., Flint), making the final score 3-0.
"This is one of the finer performances by a Michigan State team on this field in a few years, " said MSU head coach Joe Baum. "We played great offense and defense and had a lot of good plays at both ends of the field."
