East Lansing, Mich. - After playing scoreless regulation soccer, Michigan State and Penn State needed double overtime to decide a winner Sunday afternoon at Old College Field. In the end, Penn State's Chad Severs lifted PSU to a 1-0 victory in the 111th minute. Each team is now 8-3-1 overall this year, MSU is 3-2 in the Big Ten while PSU is 4-1-1.
Each team had scoring opportunities in the first half but it was the goalkeepers who stole the show. MSU goalkeeper Mike Robinson (So., Troy) made the save of the day when he laid out horizontally to make a diving save off a header to keep the game scoreless. Penn State's Ryan Sickman turned away several Spartan scoring opportunites in the first half.
"Both goalkeepers played outstanding today," MSU coach Joe Baum said. "Mike (Robinson) was just great today. Both keepers were the two stars of the game."
The second half proved to be more of the same as this time the players did their part to keep the game scoreless. The Spartans' Kellen Kalso (Fr., Oxford) made a spectacular bicycle kick save when Robinson was out of the net in the 54th minute. Robinson also came up big in the 84th minute as he staved off a flury in front of the MSU net, making another diving save.
"It was a great game," said Baum. "It came down to one bad bounce for us. We played a great game defensively but just couldn't put it in the net."
MSU will host Western Michigan, Wednesday, Oct. 24 in its last home game of the season at 3 p.m.
