East Lansing, Mich. - Two first-half penalty kicks that translanted into two goals for the Spartans proved to be the difference as the Michigan State men's soccer team defeated intrastate rival Michigan, Sunday, Oct. 14 by a socre of 4-2 at Old College Field. MSU's Nick DeGraw (Jr., Clinton Twp.) scored the first goal after a Michigan foul inside the box. Anders Kelto (Sr., Traverse City) put home the second penalty kick after a hand-ball was called on U-M inside the box to give MSU a 2-0 lead.
Michigan would respond however as Robert Wurth put the Wolverines on the board in the 37th minute on a unassisted goal. MSU regained its two-goal lead just over two minutes later when Jeff Krass (So., Brighton) took a pass from Steve Arce (Sr., Windsor, Ont.) and knocked it in to give MSU a 3-1 halftime lead.
U-M again was able to cut the lead to one goal when Jody Keeling scored in the 61st minute making the score 3-2. The goal gave Michigan momentum as they kept attacking the MSU goal but Spartan goalkeeper Mike Robinson (So., Troy), who was brilliant in net all day, turned away the rest of the Wolverines' chances, including a diving save off a header in the 78th minute to keep the score 3-2.
State (8-2-1, 3-1) iced the game in the 80th minute when Thomas Trivelloni (So., Mt. Clemens) scored his fifth goal of the year off a pass from Craig Hearn (So., Farmington Hills), making the final score 4-2.
"Today was a fantastic, exciting college soccer game, " MSU head coach Joe Baum said. "I was really proud of the way we played. We showed a lot of composure by scoring that fourth goal."
MSU will look to keep its five-game unbeaten streak alive when they host Penn State, Sunday, Oct. 21 at 2:30 p.m. at Old College Field.
