EAST LANSING, Mich. - The Michigan State women's soccer team (6-5-2, 3-4-1) defeated Indiana (6-4-1, 3-3-1), 2-1, on Sunday afternoon at Old College Field. Michigan State sophomore Trisha Kenny (Saginaw, Mich.) assisted on both Spartan goals as MSU defeated the Hoosiers who were ranked #23 in the nation by the NSCAA.
The Spartans struck early as Kenny found sophomore Tiffany Laskowski (Troy, Mich.) on the left side of the box. Laskowski's shot found the back of the net, just inside the far post to give MSU a 1-0 lead just 5:12 into the contest. The Hoosiers, however, would battle back and tie the game on a Kelly Kram goal at 36:29.
In the second half, MSU was determined to be the aggressor as the Spartans mounted several quality scoring opportunities. At the 59:34 mark, freshman Adrienne Treado's (Troy, Mich.) shot hit the cross bar from 16 yards out. Just five minutes later, Kenny fired a shot from just outside the box on the left side. The shot went through the Indiana keeper's hands, but she was able to recover the ball before it crossed the goal line.
Not to be discouraged by the near goals, the Spartans continued to apply pressure. At the 67:13 mark, MSU sophomore Kristin Arrington (Novi, Mich.) scored her second goal of the season on an assist from Kenny.
Anchored by sophomore goalkeeper Stacy Heller (Madison, Wis.), the Spartan defense made sure that the 2-1 lead remained intact. For the game, Heller made three saves.
"Today was an important win for our team," said MSU head coach Tom Saxton. "We challenged our team yesterday and today they played with greater intensity and focus. Indiana is a very good team and today was a good win for our program."
Michigan State returns to action on Thursday, Oct. 18 at 4 p.m. EDT at Oakland University. The Spartans will make their next appearance at Old College Field on Sunday, Oct. 21 vs. Minnesota.
