East Lansing, Mich. - The Michigan State men's soccer team will take on Valparaiso (1-4) this Friday, September 29 at 4 p.m. The Spartans (4-3) are trying to rebound from a tough 1-0 loss to two-time defending champion Indiana last Sunday. The Spartans will play their second Big Ten game Sunday, October 1 at 1 p.m. when they host Northwestern. Both of this weekend's games will take place at Old College Field.
"We have lost three straight to three tough opponents but we have played well in each game," said MSU soccer coach Joe Baum. "Our defense has played well, we gave up just one goal to Indiana last week in 90 minutes of play and the week before gave up one goal in an overtime loss to Gonzaga."
"Offensively, we have been sputtering and we need to be more consistent," added Baum. The Spartans have been shutout in their last three games.
Northwestern (0-8), which beat the Spartans last season 1-0, enters their game with MSU as a team with a tough defensive reputation.
"Northwestern is a very good defensive team and they play an aggressive, physical style. We need to try and open it up against them and create more offensive chances," commented Baum.
