EAST LANSING, Mich. - Former Illinois women's swimming coach James Lutz has been tabbed to guide the Michigan State men's and women's swimming and diving programs. Lutz replaces Richard Bader, who left to take an administrative position in the MSU athletics department.
"I couldn't be more pleased about the opportunity to be here," said Lutz. "Coach Bader did a good job of putting good people in this program. I'm extremely optimistic about what this team can do."
Lutz, the winningest swimming coach in Illini history, compiled a 59-37 record in seven seasons in Champaign. He coached nine NCAA qualifiers, 34 Academic All-Big Ten honorees and two Academic All-Americans during his seven-year tenure at Illinois.
Prior to his stint at Illinois, Lutz served as assistant coach and recruiting coordinator at the University of Arizona for four seasons. While at Arizona, he coached 27 All-Americans and five NCAA qualifiers.
