EAST LANSING, Mich. - The Michigan State Spartan women's gymnastics team learned on Sunday that it had advanced to the NCAA Region IV Championships, to be held at the University of Alabama on April 1 at 6 p.m.
MSU was the fifth seed in the region. Six teams are selected for each of six regionals and the top two teams from each region advance to the NCAA Championships in Boise, Idaho, on April 15-17. Alabama was the top seed in Region IV with a regional qualifying score (RQS) of 196.670. The second seed was Iowa State (196.195) followed by Central Michigan (195.005), Kent (194.89), MSU (194.750) and Ohio State (194.235).
Michigan State did not advance to regionals last year but was represented by Melissa Green as an all-arounder. The Spartans have been to the NCAA Regionals four times in the 1990s. MSU was fifth in 1993, fourth in '96, fifth in '97 and seventh in '98. The highest finish the Spartans have ever had in NCAA regional competition is third (1985, '86, '87, '88 '89). MSU has advanced just once to the NCAA Championships, in 1988, where the team finished 12th.
